I first taught what was then called “aerobics” for adults and was an assistant tumbling coach for youth at my sister’s gym for four years while I was in college in my early 20’s. My first fitness certification back then was through a program called Aerobicise. After graduating from college, I got busy with my career as a counselor, and my fitness regime was hit and miss for several years. I became interested in yoga many years later at a time in my life when I was under a lot of stress, struggled with depression and anxiety, abused alcohol, and couldn’t find relief despite exploring several avenues for healing, which included many years of personal counseling—all were helpful to varying degrees. I’d always been one to be active; enjoyed running, cardio and strength training, but I still struggled to manage my moods and relax fully.
I tried out yoga consistently through a 30-day Groupon at a local studio in 2013 and quickly experienced relief in my mind, body, and spirit and have been practicing yoga and meditation regularly since then. I became a Certified Yoga Teacher (CYT-200) through Kansas City Yoga Teacher Training Program in March, 2015, and have been teaching in a variety of locations since. My passion for teaching yoga grew into a passion for teaching fitness, and I got certified as a Personal Fitness Trainer in 2017, and then earned my Group Fitness Instructor certification in 2019. In February, 2023, I completed a two year certification as a mindfulness meditation teacher. I also have many years of experience teaching a variety of workshops to community businesses and yoga studios on mental health, wellness and addiction topics, including mindful movement for mental health, mind/body tool kit to manage stress, and life skills for recovery from addiction, just to name a few of many I have offered. I have a Master’s degree in Education/Counseling and Bachelor’s degrees in Psychology and Addiction Studies. I am semi-retired as a Licensed Professional Counselor as of July of 2022 after 38 years in the mental health/addiction fields and maintain a part-time private practice in Blue Springs counseling individuals, couples, and families. My intention and hope are that I can be a supportive guide for my students to feel seen and accepted, to improve their overall quality of and meaning to their lives, and to find healing. Thank you to all my teachers and students past and present who continue to teach and inspire me every day! “Don’t let what you cannot do interfere with what you can do.” --John Wooden Certifications:
